1967 DAF 44 Variomatic Series 1 - very good condition

Built in Eindhoven at the original DAF factory, as DAF’s passenger car production was not moved from Eindhoven to Born until later in 1967. Made in Holland, yet unmistakably designed by the Italian master designer Giovanni Michelotti. And it shows.

The first series can be recognised by several distinctive details, including the elegant trim strip on the front, the angular door handles and the decorative trim along the roof. The DAF logos are still in script, and the familiar ‘Variomatic’ badge proudly adorns the rear. Finished in a deep black-green colour, which contrasts beautifully with the extensive chrome trim.

This DAF was restored in the past, although the paintwork now shows some signs of use. The car is also fitted with light-alloy Minilite wheels. A highly sought-after upgrade and, of course, ultimately a matter of personal taste.

Technically, the car retains its original 844 cc, two-cylinder, air-cooled boxer engine producing 34 hp. This DAF drives exceptionally well, runs smoothly and responds beautifully to the throttle. The characteristic sound of the boxer engine is an absolute delight to hear.

The fully automatic Variomatic transmission was also completely rebuilt during the restoration. It whistles exactly as it should, contributing to the superb driving experience of this DAF. Clearly, no expense was spared in restoring this 44, and it shows in the way the car drives.

The interior is every bit as elegant as the exterior. It features a two-tone dashboard, the original Series 1 steering wheel and a simple combination instrument cluster. As it should be, the interior is finished in black and blue. The seats and rear bench are upholstered in brown vinyl, creating a beautiful combination with both the dashboard and the car’s distinctive paintwork.
