The Legras glassworks in Saint Denis, near Paris, became one of the important French glass manufacturers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The name Legras is closely associated with François Théodore Legras, a renowned French master glassmaker who directed the Saint Denis glassworks from 1866 until 1909. Under his leadership, the manufacture developed an important artistic glass production, distinguished by enamelled and engraved decorations inspired by flowers, foliage, forests and natural landscapes.
François Théodore Legras was both the designer and artistic driving force behind many of the celebrated Legras creations. His childhood in the forests of the Vosges strongly influenced his artistic vocabulary, with woodland landscapes, trees, plants and lakes becoming recurring themes in Legras glassware.
This elegant vase features a refined naturalistic landscape with trees, branches and rich green tones. The combination of transparent glass and finely painted and decorated details creates remarkable depth and gives the landscape an atmospheric appearance. The organic design is characteristic of the Legras tradition and makes this vase a particularly attractive piece of French antique glass.
The vase is dated approximately to 1925 and represents the later Legras production, at the transition from Art Nouveau towards the emerging Art Deco period. Legras continued to produce artistic glass under its established name during this period.
