The American Packard brand has always represented pure luxury, and this 1949 Packard Custom Eight is a perfect example. The Packard was affectionately nicknamed the Pregnant Elephant because of its distinctive shape. This particular example comes from a private collection and is ready for its next adventure.
This Custom Eight was restored in the early 1990s and subsequently enjoyed on various tours and events. It was later added to a private collection, where it remained for some time.
The ivory coloured exterior is complemented by the imposing front end with its extensive chrome detailing. The exterior is in good condition and shows some signs of use consistent with its age. A particularly charming feature is the working spotlight mounted on the roof.
Interior
The interior is truly impressive. It is finished with beautiful fabric upholstery, carefully detailed with numerous small chrome accents. The original dashboard features a metal wood effect finish and an impressive array of instruments.
The roof mounted spotlight can be operated directly from the driver's cockpit. Another wonderful detail is the radio, which is completely integrated into the dashboard.
The fabric upholstery was replaced in the past and is therefore in excellent condition, while the other interior components remain original.
Engine and Mechanical Condition
The Packard is powered by an impressive 5,833 cc eight cylinder inline engine producing 160 hp. It is paired with a completely new old stock three speed manual gearbox, making this an especially unique and original combination.
The starter motor has also recently been completely rebuilt at a cost of more than €2,200.
The Packard drives, brakes and shifts well. However, after an extended period of storage, we recommend having the car thoroughly inspected before using it extensively. A test drive is of course no problem.
The Custom Eight was one of Packard's most luxurious specifications and examples are rarely seen today. This particular Packard is in good condition and ready for its next owner and new adventures.
